How do we work towards our training materials being FAIR?

We are striving to increase our FAIRness of training material in accordance with the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles for training materials Garcia et al. 2020. Following these principles enables trainers and trainees to find, reuse, adapt, and improve the available tutorials.

Plan to share your training materials online

We provide our online training material portfolio via the Content and Learning Management system LearnDash as well as additional material via github repositories.

Improve findability of your training materials by properly describing them

Rich metadata associated with each material that are visible and accessible via schema.org on each tutorial webpage and are aggregated on this sitemap.

Give your training materials a unique identity

not yet implemented; option could be URL persistency with redirection in case of renaming of tutorials. Data used for tutorials stored on Zenodo and associated with a Digital Object Identifiers (DOI).

Register your training materials online

Tutorials automatically registered on TeSS, the ELIXIR’s Training e-Support System

If appropriate, define access rules for your training materials

We have fully open material as well as material which are online accessible when registering for the associated remote or in-person course.

Use an interoperable format for your training materials

In case of open content, the content of the tutorials and slides are written in Markdown. Metadata associated with tutorials stored as structured data in JSON-LD format. Images are made available in svg format where available. We are exploring technologies to make the content more machine readable and re-useable.

Make your training materials (re-)usable for trainers

Online. Rich metadata associated with each tutorial: title, contributor details, license, description, learning outcomes, audience, requirements, tags/keywords, duration, date of last revision.

Make your training materials contribution friendly and citable

We are establishing contribution guidelines to our material. Details to cite tutorials and give credit to contributors will be available at the end of each tutorial.

Keep your training materials up-to-date

We are releasing new update of each material connected to the associated course. Internally, we are establishing a collaborative and transparent peer-review and curation process.
